Canillo is one of the parishes located in the principality of Andorra. It is also the name of the main town of the Canillo Parish. Andorra is known for its world-class skiing, and Canillo does not disappoint. There are also several structures of antiquity in the town and surrounding area that should certainly be seen when visiting. Some of the most popular attractions in Canillo are historic structures that date as far back as medieval times, such as the Sant Joan de Caselles Church from the eleventh century. The church is open to the public every day during the summer. The Meritxell Sanctuary, dedicated to the patron saint of Andorra, is also located near Canillo. This church was rebuilt in 1976 after a fire, but the original structure dated back to the twelfth century. The Cross of Seven Arms, though it currently only has six arms since one was lost, is located in Canillo, as well. It is open on weekdays for public viewing. Finally, the town of Canillo is quaint and historic, and visitors love to ramble about through the shops and cafes.
Getting to Andorra is only possible by road, unless travelers want to splash out on a helicopter. The closest major international airport is in Barcelona. Other airports are located in France, including the Carcassonne Airport and the Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport. All of the airports have transfer services into Andorra and the town of Canillo. The town itself is easy to walk, though many visitors may choose to see it on a bicycle. Car rental is also another popular choice for visitors to the area.
