Even if you haven’t heard the name of this gate, you’ve probably seen plenty of photos of it. Being that the gate is one of the most popular and most photographed locations in Berlin, it only makes sense. First, you will probably want to know a few facts about the gate before you visit. The gate, commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia, was supposed to be a sign of peace. Carl Gotthard Langhans was charged with building the gate from 1788 to 1791.

During World War II, the gate suffered some heavy damage, as did many buildings in and around the city. Though it was still a popular site, it did have some visible damage up until the early part of this century. From 2000 to 2002, the Brandenburg Gate underwent restoration. Today, it looks just as spectacular as it did when it was first built.

The gate’s pillared design is based upon the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The aesthetics of the gate is another thing that draws people to it, and it is one of the reasons it remains one of the most photographed structures in the city. You are certainly going to want to take photos of this monument when you are visiting, so make sure your charge your camera batteries.
